Sunday Science...We made our own lava lamp!

What a fun experiment!! My daughter had been on Pinterest and found a cool science experiment, to make your own Lava Lamps!!  So we had to try it out!  The original pin was linked to a cute little blog here:  http://slsmithphotography.typepad.com/my_weblog/2010/06/lava-lamps-summer-fun.html
This is fun and easy , here are the Ingredients and Directions:

Vegetable Oil, Alka-Seltzer, Large Mouth tall water bottle, food coloring and water.

First:  We added vegetable oil about 3/4 of the bottle full.

Next:  We added water to fill the rest of the way.

Here we added about 10 drops of food coloring, we used blue.

Next: We broke up the Seltzer tab into pieces.

We dropped one at a time and this is what it created as it dissolved.  COOL RIGHT!?

So, after we played with the blue for awhile, my daughter decided to add a few drops of yellow to see what would happen.

Slowly, the color started to change to green! You can still see some of the separate droplets of yellow and blue here.  FUN!

So, now we changed the color, we decided to see what would happen if we added more than one tablet at a time!  It turned from cool to AWESOME!

This is a fun and Super Simple project to do with your kids!  The original directions stated that you could save the solution and just add more seltzer until the solution became too cloudy.  We have done this several times already today and it is not cloudy yet.  We hope you enjoyed our Sunday Science Experiment and that you may try at home too!

Have fun experimenting!!
